Try as people might to protect their valuable laptops from damage of any kind, it can happen so easily. Anything that we carry around with us all the time is in jeopardy of be damaged or lost because we do take it everywhere. It goes from the house, to the car, from the car, to school or the office, we take it with us to lunch, or any other place where we might need it and these days that can be anywhere.

What we have to do is learn that it has to be protected and handled with caution even when we get so busy that we can not think straight. It has to become second nature to keep an eye on it and make sure we keep it out of harms way. It is easy to put it in the back seat of the car and then throw in a couple of bags of groceries in on top of it. Laptops are being made much more durable lately, but they are not indestructible.

With this in mind there are a few precautions that we should take with laptops because the risk of them being damaged in some will be greater by putting them in certain situations. One of these risk is by keeping them anywhere near kids. Children are naturally curious and even if they do not mean to do it harm they can. Things get spilled, buttons get punched, or they might decide to sit on it. Just be very careful with your laptop around children.

Taking your laptop to certain places just makes no sense and would just be asking for trouble. The bathroom is one place and swimming pools or hot tubs are another. You never want to deliberately take your laptop anywhere that it can get moisture or water in it. Even when you are at your desk at home it is smart to keep drinks like coffee or soda well away from it because these types of beverages spilled into a laptop can be even more damaging than water.

If your laptop is ever wet by water or any other liquid it is important to turn it off immediately and unplug it if it is running off of electricity. If it has been damaged by plain water, you can take off the covers and allow it to dry for several days and then try and turn it on. Sometimes they will work, but not always. If another liquid like soda is spilled into it, you may as well take it to be repaired by a qualified technician. If the damage is not too bad it might be repaired but there is no guarantee.

Saving money is really important to you in your consumer purchases. You want to stretch your dollars so that every cent gets you the best value in everything you buy. This is true whether you are buying an mp3 player, laptop computer, or refrigerator. You want value in your GPS purchases.

The only way to do that is to do research on the highest quality products and to find the best way to get those products at the lowest price point. One way to do that is scour the internet and newspaper adds for the best sales. This can take time trying to find out what things are really selling for these days.

Or, you can buy a refurbished GPS.

It is true that there has been a dramatic dip in the pricing of GPS units across the board. In car navigation systems used to run above $500 on a regular basis. These units were costly and you could only hope to get a deal on them if you really looked hard. If you were lucky enough to find a refurbished item it was often gone in an instant because so many people wanted these items.

Now prices are relatively low, often well below the $500 mark. This has left some people wondering why you would even consider buying a refurbished GPS. The reason you should still buy refurbished is that these items are still cheaper than a “brand spanking new” model.

The current price for a TomTom One Third Edition auto GPS on one online retailer is currently just under $200 ‘new.’ If you were to buy its refurbished counterpart on the same retailer you would see a savings of $50. That is like getting a 25% discount just because you went with a product that initially failed the manufacturer’s production standards but has since qualified after being re-outfitted.

The product is exactly the same. The functionality is exactly the same. The value is exactly the same. But the price is radically different.

You shouldn’t just listen to what you read on the internet, though. You need to go out and do your own research and talk to a sales rep yourself if you really want to take advantage of the deals available. Know what you are getting into when you buy a refurbished item and what exactly the means. You will be surprised to know that it can mean a lot of different things.

A refurbished item can simply be on that didn’t work like the company wanted it to so they then fixed it post production. It could have a scratch on it that prevents the manufacturer from selling it as new because of their own production standards. Or it can be an older device with new guts. Whatever the reason the reason for the refurbishment, you will want to know why. This will make you an informed consumer and it will help you decide if the 25% discount is really worth it or if you just want to spend money needlessly.

Why buy new when you can buy refurbished? It is cheaper and you get the same bang for your buck.

If you read this post, mostlikely you have internet connection. But sadly, having Internet does not mean you benefit from the best possible connection, even though we are approaching the year 2009 soon and after all these years after dial-up, we would expect some more progress in connection speed worldwide. I often take the broadband speed test to see if I am actually getting the connection speed advertised by my provider and you are very welcome to do the same. You might be quite surprised to see you are getting a lot less than what you are supposed to and moreover - what you are paying for.

This Broadband Expert Speed test which I chose to link to, is designed to accurately examine your broadband speed. While it is best suited UK broadband users, it works perfect even for people like myself who live on the back of the beyond. I am paying for 1,5MB connection and look whatta robbery when it comes to uploading..

nokia-e71-black-1.jpg

Nokia have finally announced the E71, their QWERTY keyboard Symbian phone. The specs had been leaked a while ago – but here are the full features and specifications. The Nokia E71 is an upgrade to the E61i, it is a more compact and faster version of it’s predecessor – but sadly the compacting has made the screen smaller and keyboard slightly cramped.

It does make up for the smaller screen with a host of great features, such as the 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash and A-GPS is in built with the basic functionality of Nokia maps for free (full functionality is available for a fee). The Nokia E71 is a HSDPA handset and should allow for a maximum download speed of 3.6mbps where supported. There is also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and EDGE connections.

For the business people among you the Nokia E71 has the usual smartphone applications and features such as push email, a document viewer and office applications. While those who are looking for a little more fun should find it in the form of the multimedia player.

The Nokia E71 is a compact phone, and much smaller than its predecessor – however the size could have made the keys a little too cramped to be used with comfort and the screen is quite small. With many new smartphone trying to compete with the new 3G iPhone it is possibly going to hinder the Nokia E71 that it has such a small screen and is lacking a touchscreen.

If the Nokia E71 is your kind of thing then look out for it in July 2007 in either Grey Steel or White Steel colours.

LG’s new KF700 feels good in your hands. It may feel bulky at first but the smooth lines as well as the slick sliding function to reveal an alphanumeric keypad will make you fall in love with this device immediately. LG has decided to invest into a hybrid phone: touchscreen with a functional keypad. Although Samsung has done the same before, LG tries to be practical about it and instead of incorporating a full QWERTY keyboard, they settled for a normal keypad and it turned out a Sheer beauty.

The LG KF700 is interface-intensive, that means the designers at LG decide to make better use of the idea on making the interface simple, friendly and functional. New widgets are added into this mobile phone. They can be accessed easily from the right pane by simple sliding. Using haptic technology, moving around the many functions is very easy. You can use very gentle presses and the phone will respond with a soft vibration to confirm your choice.

A shortcut key at the back helps the user scroll down the different menu options. The only downside to this is its inability to choose the menu icon. You still have to click the OK button on the front of the phone. They have also decided to integrate faster download times with an HSDPA speed of up to 7.2 mbps. WAP and HTML browser can be used completely with tabbed browsing. Unfortunately, this phone lacks WiFi capability. But with connectivity options of both Bluetooth and USB 2.0, who needs unreliable WiFi?

Sound is excellent when it comes to the LG KF700’s music player and a loudspeaker option is also available. It also has a trusty FM radio but without RDS feeds. You can, however, store at least 20 stations manually. The camera is pretty standard at 3 megapixels but its autofocus and image stabilizer helps the user get constant beautiful pictures. The touchscreen can have you show the pictures in landscape or panoramic views. The best thing about the large 3-inch screen display is the widescreen option that you can choose to play or watch videos with.

Despite the NVP’s early origination date, it was not until 1996 that VoIP became widely available to consumers. Even then, the protocol and network structures had a long way to go, and the system was relatively inefficient. As technology has evolved and advanced, VoIP has become a realistic cost-effective solution to consider.

Currently, the chief alternative to VoIP is the PSTN, or public switched telephone network, which utilizes the traditional structure of circuit switching. The PSTN is a world network, much like the Internet, and includes household and mobile phones. When VoIP first came out, it was incompatible with PSTN, meaning users could only connect to other people with VoIP. Many early complications such as this have since been overcome, making VoIP much more viable than it was a decade ago.

What can VoIP do that the PSTN cannot One feature is the ability to add multiple phone lines without incurring additional costs, as it is possible to transmit several phone calls over the same connection. Other features that normally cost extra for a PSTN phone are free on VoIP; this includes attributes such as call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID. When encryption is employed, the security of the network is strong and hard to break in to.
Although VoIP can be made secure through encryptions, most of the software on the market today does not support that function. While SRTP is available for business applications, it rarely is accessible to the average consumer. For users who do not have any encryption mechanism, they can still rely on security by obscurity, which is usually fine enough for non-business uses.

A metal detector is a useful electronic device that uses electromagnetic fields to detect metal. It is used in mining, archaeology, and hobbies such as treasure hunting. Whether you are one of the many who seek the thrill of finding treasure, or the ones who are doing excavations or digs, then you will need a metal detector to make your jobs easier. The following are buying a metal detector tips.

To get the best of your money, consider these questions before you make your purchase:

Cost

Metal detectors can be very expensive. They run for as low as $50 to more than $400, depending on its features. The more advanced models are usually the ones that cost more, so it is important to know what features you need and do not need. Besides, buying a metal detector with too many features that you will not use can be too overwhelming.

Place of Use

Like appliances and other equipment, metal detectors are also built for different uses. Metal detectors to be used on the beach will need to be waterproof, while the ones to be used to rough terrains need to be designed to withstand those places.

Length of Use

Some metal detector models do not work the same duration of hours as others. While some can run for 24 hours or longer, others do not last as long. This depends on the battery life of the device. Some run with either replaceable or rechargeable batteries, and others come with a charging kit.

Durability

Choose a metal detector the same way you would choose all your other belongings-make sure it is durable, made of strong materials, and will survive your normal usage. This way, you can save money and be contented with your choice.

Adaptability

Choose a metal detector that can be upgraded, or allows add-ons and other devices to be attached to it. Do not get one that seems like a dead end, with all its features locked and no room for improvement.

Reliability

The job of a metal detector is to find what you normally cannot. Its metal-searching scope will dig deeper than you, so it has to be precise and have accurate detection. Test the metal detector before you buy it. If it cannot detect small pieces of metal or jewelry nearby, then do not get it, even if it is cheap.

Answers Your Needs

Always get advice or a second opinion, preferably from an expert on metal detectors. Make sure the information and metal detector tips you get are helpful and updated so you will not have to regret choosing a wrong model or buying the more expensive one.

Invest on a metal detector that has most or all of the features you will need for the right price. Since metal detectors are expensive, you will definitely need one that will serve you at its best. Ask around for more metal detector tips so you can be sure of your choice.
